When starting a divorce, it is important to seek expert advice from a specialist family law solicitor. We can advise you from start to finish.
There is one ground for a divorce: the marriage has irretrievably broken down.
Five ways to show this to a divorce court
- Desertion for more than two years
- Separation for two years or more with the other person’s consent
- Separation for five years or more without the other person’s consent
The divorce procedure is set out in our divorce flow chart.
It usually takes about four to six months to complete the divorce. However, the overall timescale can be longer where, for example, the finances and/or anything to do with the children need to be addressed.
Caution: the international divorce
Extra care must be taken where the case has an international element to it because there could be more than one country where the divorce could start. The financial outcomes in each country could be starkly different and specialist family law advice must be taken in each country.
