International Family Law
Introduction
More and more people are moving and working around the world, marrying in different countries or to different nationals and/or buying or transferring assets overseas. The world is indeed becoming a smaller place!
A specialist area of this firm is international family law. Where a relationship breaks down an international aspect to a family law case can be quite complex and speed of approach can be vital.
Issues that commonly arise relate to:
• divorce jurisdiction and financial outcome
• the movement of children to include:
o relocation of children
o child abduction
It can also make a difference if a divorce case is within or outside of the European Union and whether or not, for children, certain conventions apply between countries eg. 1980 Hague Convention.
We are expert in dealing with international family law cases. James Maguire is a Fellow of the International Academy of Matrimonial Lawyers and is a member of the Law Society’s child abduction panel. He is also on the panel for a number of embassies (including the US Embassy and Canadian High Commission) and British Consulates overseas. We also have contact to a number of leading lawyers worldwide.
We are family lawyers in England and Wales who concentrate on international divorce and family issues. We are not lawyers in other jurisdictions and we work with independent lawyers around the world to resolve international family law cases.
